The Alberta University & College Squash Championships wrapped up this past weekend, and while the turnout was similar to last year, the results were very different!
The biggest differences were on the Men's side, where the competition was made substantially deeper than last year with the addition of several Open players representing U of C and the U of A. Last year, Neil Pohlman cruised to victory with relative ease in both the individual and team competitions, bringing home both titles for the powerhouse U of C. This year was a very different story however, as it was the U of A that dominated the competition when it's representatives ousted both individual and U of C teams in every semifinal! Subhan Rana's team would drop the first two team matches in the final before storming back to take the next two in decisive fashion and capture the team title by a difference of only one game. John Clarkin's team settled for silver, but John would find redemption by taking home Gold on the individual side over Abdelrahman El Nady in four games.
On the women's side, U of C was again the victor, although strong Egyptian recruitment by U of A saw a much narrower margin of victory compared to last year. Erin Roberts took home the individual competition Gold for the second year in a row after a hard-fought, 5-game battle with U of A's Nour Elhendawi. In the team final, it was again U of C vs. U of A and, like the men, matches were split 2-2. Going down to games again saw the teams tied, so points had to be tabulated. Following this analysis, U of C were declared the victors by a margin of 20 points.
The event was another big success, with students from 4 schools participating and the event thoroughly enjoyed by all. Squash Alberta would like to extend a huge thanks to the sponsors of this event: Canadian Jesters, Calgary Interclub Squash Association, PlastiFab Inc., and Mo Aladin (Montana's) for their support; without it the event quality would not be the same! Squash Alberta looks forward to hosting another fantastic event next season.
