Canadian Squash Community Mourns the Loss of Former National Team Member, Arjun Gupta

The Canadian squash community is mourning the passing of Arjun Gupta, multi-time National Champion and former Canadian National Team member who left the world too soon on July 22, 2023. Arjun began his prolific squash career winning the Boys U13 Canadian Junior Championship in 2004, under the guidance of coach Jamie Nicholls. He followed this up with the Boys U15 US Junior Open in 2005 and the 2008 U19 Ontario Championships. Later that year, as a member of Team Canada, Arjun medaled at the Pan American Junior Championships in Lima, Peru. With training from Jonathan Power, Arjun went on to help Canada achieve their best historical finish at the World Junior Championships in 2010 alongside teammates Nicholas Sachvie, Andrew Schnell, Tyler Osborne and Coach Jonathan Hill, emerging victorious in the deciding match against England to earn the Bronze Medal. Arjun then starred for Cornell University as part of the Class of ’13, where the team peaked with a 4th place finish in the 2011 NCAA varsity championships.

Squash Canada’s Road to Podium Fund: Donate Today and Support Team Canada

The 2023 international squash season is full of many opportunities for our Canadian athletes to develop, and blossom on the international stage, as well as earn some podium finishes for their country. With this being a Pan American Games year, there is an increased number of events on the calendar, coupled with a return to sport and competition post-pandemic, these realities have put a strain on Squash Canada and the families that support the expense of the country’s best and up-and-coming athlete participation.

Help is needed by the greater squash community to support Canadian Teams’ travel and expense to the following events over the next six months:

  • Team Canada at 2023 Pan American Games, Chile
  • Team Canada at 2023 Men’s World Team Championships, New Zealand

The Squash Canada Road to Podium Fund allows a donor to direct their support across all events. Donors will receive a tax donation receipt and take pride in being a Team Canada supporter - the team behind the team!

Playground to Podium

Squash Canada is excited to announce our Playground to Podium Campaign. The Campaign will outfit new players in a grassroots or beginner program with a “Squash Starter Kit”, full of everything they need to get started: racquet, balls, goggles, and backpack. By providing the necessary equipment to new players in these programs, this Campaign will help address participation barriers and foster the growth and sustainability of squash in Canada.

From July 1st to August 31st, any donation of $250 or greater to the Road to Podium Fund will give donors the option of identifying a club or province/territory they would like their “Squash Starter Kit” to be donated to. At the end of the Campaign, Kits will be delivered to their new homes in time for the start of the squash season.
